
During its walking tour of Mumbai, INDIA: MY SECOND HOME includes a visit to Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, one of the city’s large open-air “laundromats” where washers, known as dhobis, take care of the laundry for households, hotels and hospitals in countless rows of open-air concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone (yep, they literally beat the dirt out of your stuff). It’s a system that’s existed for centuries, which is all the more remarkable to see in the shadows of modern Mumbai high-rises.
